When perusing around the internet for the top things to do in Nanaimo and surrounding areas, you'll soon discover the top five are all associated with being outdoors! And is it any wonder when in Nanaimo, you're just five to 10 minutes from being ocean side, lake side or mountain side? One local resident expressed, "just look at how amazing it is here." If and when you're in Nanaimo, make sure to slow yourself down, really look around you and experience your surroundings as the cool breeze blows on your neck, the majestic birds sing their song overhead, and the clouds roll on by.

The Big 4:  With that said, the top four attractions or "don't miss" things to do in Nanaimo and on Vancouver Island are: Wildplay, Newcastle Island, Englishman River Falls Provincial Park and Pipers Lagoon Park.

Wildplay

Wildplay NanaimoDrive out to the Nanaimo River and you’ll find a 17-acre Park which is home to an array of scenery and fun. At Wildplay you can try the 46m Bungy Jump and the 140 km/h Primal Swing launch from Nanaimo’s famous trestle-inspired bridge and dive toward the awesome Nanaimo River; the gentle guided DragonFLY Zip Lines soar from high River Canyon edges; the inaugural Monkido® Aerial Adventure which allows the younger fun seekers to participate.

Newcastle Island is just a quick ferry ride to a picturesque and historic island where you can find a quiet beach and picnic or walk some trails. Don't let this simple description dismay you. It is the number two ranked activity to do in Nanaimo area!

Pipers Lagoon Park is an ideal activity whether you walk the trails or the beach. The connected island opens to a picturesque cove with a great view of the surrounding landscape. One visitor called it, "the jewel of Nanaimo."

Here is an activity not to miss just a short drive North of Nanaimo:

Englishman River Falls Provincial Park is a nice hike with views of gorgeous waterfalls. The flora, fauna and overall atmosphere are very impressive. It is never too crowded and a wonderful treat any time of year!
