Things to do in Nanaimo in August

August is a fantastic month in Nanaimo.  It is a time to get out on the water and into the community. Many of the things to do in Nanaimo this August revolve around the community.  Some options include:

August 17-19between 9am-9pm: The Vancouver Island Exhibition (Beban Park). The motto for this event is"Critters, squeals and ferris wheels" .  The exhibition has been around since 1894.  Some of the activities and events you can expect to see are horse shows, silent auction, livestock displays, a Kid’s Zone, goat milking demonstrations, Jack Russell terrier races, as well as lively tribute bands.  I f you get bored with any of that you can enjoy some lively fun on the rides.

The Bowen Road Farmers' Market: A fun & vibrant market with wonderful locally grown produce. The market also feature musicians and vendors selling products and produce that have been grown within an 80 km radius  

Cedar Yellowpoint Artisans Tour:  If you would like to enjoy a day in the country take the summer Cedar Yellowpoint Artisans tour.  You can visit their website to download a map of the tour at www.cyartisans.com.  With the map in hand you can tour artists’ studios, farms or shop for fresh produce or eat in a local restaurant.

Visit the Harbour Islands:  If a day on the water is what you are looking for you could hop a ferry to Newcastle Island provincial Marine Park and explore the island beaches and trails.  You can bring your bike on the small ferry and enjoy the extensive trail system on the island.  Concession services are available during the summer at a 1930s-era pavilion built by the Canadian Pacific Steamship Company

Another fun thing to do is take a ferry to Protection Island and enjoy lunch or dinner at Canada’s only floating pub.
